Not sure how I activated the special mode but fun stuff here! Dressing up as a Pop-Tart sure is a different kind of experience too...

Special mode is copyrighted!
Basically an idle game hmm. ;) This brings back memories...
Maybe not the most useful thing but I'm glad someone actually made this! One of those little gadgets it'll be fun to have around, for whatever purpose you may have for it.

I figured I'd make it as accurate as I could to the original because no one here has done this yet! (Except for a retro themed one)
As a devoted DOOM fan you know I was a liiittle disappointed there wasn't more DOOM in this, but it's a nice idea otherwise. Hella difficult with how you continually have to adjust your aim though and move with two sets of keys in parallel to work around that. Maybe you eventually figure out a camera pattern that lets you avoid paying as much attention to that though... will probably come back to this when I'm a bit less aggravated by the challenge.
Otherwise I love the atmosphere! Good games back in the day were always all about the essentials, and it feels like this plays on that early aesthetic a bit... even if it might've been more so a limitation they had to work around way back when.
Good game albeit with a little high initial difficulty; multitasking requirement.

Admittedly this game has little to do with Doom. The original project was just kind of a "I wonder if I can do 3D in Flash" but once I made the engine I realized walls, environments, or even just more than a dozen or so objects would be difficult to render on screen, especially in a way that looked good. So rather than having mazes with keys and doors, I opted to make a desolate forest, and the result was that it didn't make much sense to have traditional Doom-like gameplay. I ended up settling for Gloom as a name for three reasons: one, it was a cute play on the original concept I had for making Doom clone; two, making a dark and gloomy game allowed me to hide the lack of objects in the distance behind darkness; and three, having a campfire and a light mechanic (hence the gloomy aspect) as a central mechanic was an effective way at keeping the player close to the center of a map where all of the rendered objects were (tricky to do when you can't make traditional walls.)
I did really want to make the camera work better (I've talked about this in some other responses already.) You're definitely right that the initial difficulty is the worst part, as it takes several games to get comfortable with it.
As far as aesthetic, thank my buddy Shin for the art - the atmosphere wouldn't have been anywhere near what it is without him doing a fantastic job.
Daaang this one was addicting... so easy to play. So easy to replay. And it doesn't seem like there's a pattern to the randomness you can figure out either... I see no 'spam' element in this one at all. Solid. Both music and 'game over' loop really set that atmosphere too.

thanks as always bb
This might come in handy! :D Fun stuff.
Seems to be working perfectly via the NG Player but wonder what Ruffle does to those textboxes now hmm...
-cd-
Ruffle is the noise my crisps make when I pull one out of the packet
Being an icon mod ain't as easy as I assumed it was. :) Might need to flag something for a perfect score hmm... game plays well though, and medals seems to work well as well via the NG Player. Couldn't get the embed working as planned otherwise, may require additional workarounds to get it fully functional via browser too. Anyway. fun game Little Rena! And thanks for the medals.
Might bring some more peeps to the thumbnail crew too hmm. Noble promo.
-cd-
Hopefully more people want to help bring more icons in! It's a shame the medals are all weird working, and wonky. But yeah, you come across some odd stuff when you go looking at iconless submissions!
Learned a lot with this one! Good game. Though one flag didn't load correctly, question 23 in the extended one (if there's no random factor with flag order): https://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/477619bd39c4e1ac407e39e442756a10
Overall good fun! Challenging margins and catchy music with the extended version in particular. Matched the mood pretty well; added to the feeling of competition a bit.
Something like this with country flags would be pretty cool too. ;)

Hey, thanks for the review!
After seeing your comment, replaying the game on NG I noticed the images would sometimes not load properly. Looking into the issue I found that sometimes the initial call to load the image resulted in a 500 or 503 error. I noticed that this was usually the case when the image did not have enough time to properly load from the last image.
I've since updated the game to pre-load images two questions forward to prevent this from happening. Even if the game can't pre-load the image initially, it will attempt to do it again once the question comes up. After replaying the game with this it seems to have fixed the issue.
Again, thanks for the review! I do plan adding few more picture quizzes later down the line (and actually had European county flags in mind).
Almost feels like this one's even more aggravatingly difficult than the original. XD Very high flaps. Appreciate the graphical twist, but the mechanics maaan, so easy to hit those walls... also seems like the game freezes if you click the 'x' button rather than replay?
Would've preferred a bit easier mechanics but not bad otherwise.
-cd-
I actually made the game easier than the original by spacing out the "Pipes". I'll look into making the flying better. Thanks for the feedback! :)
The homework never ends! And they really take a lot of windows to kill. Windows of work time? Witty wordplay parallels there? Also do miss that ancient Win 98 logo! But at least not so difficult to avoid those pesky papers. Oh there's another possible metaphor: avoid homework to LIVE. Hmm.
The mechanics are pretty fun! I like the rain effect (though thinking maybe that's supposed to be more like a spacy speed/warp effect) and the way those bubbles stream just really feels rewarding too. As do the sounds! Only thing I really miss is some kind of conclusion, and/or more reward. API highscores. Medals. Somethin' like that.
Good game man.
-cd-
I am currently trying to figure out a way to implement a scoreboard cause I have been having trouble with that. But yeah it is rain, and the only problem is, is that it was way too loud to keep the sounds for it in... Other than that, thanks for the review, and I'll let you know if I fix this anytime soon my main focus is on Peter Work at Freddy Movie Finale: The Corruption atm so expect to see that soon.
Thanks again!
