It's Summer

Posted by Cyberdevil - June 11th, 2013

Have a good one! I'm leaving for vacation in the uncivilized Northern Norths in... just a few hours. As a lasting contribution during this obligatory hiatus, here's my entry for the Draw Your Summer collaboration that'll hopefully go down some time this summer when I'm somewhere far away basking in watery sunshine.

See you all in September!

It's Summer

Comments

I wish you a great vacation!

Likewise!

It ain't summer in canada, in fact it hasn't stopped raining the past weeks.

The more rain, the more you'll savor the sun! :) That's the usual summer here too though, feels like it's always raining, but at the end of it all it turns out there were quite a few sunny days anyways.

Neat, enjoy your extended vacation.

Thanks, enjoy your intended vacation!

Yea buddy, time to step away from reviewing EVERY submission.

I'll catch up, it's only 60x90 days. :P

Well, have a good hiatus! Is there even a telephone where you're going? Can't imagine being offline for months on end, but then again, half my life's been spent offline and in better days O_O

I have no clue what you could be farming up there, but I hope the critters and Mama Nature take it easy on ya! Hope you seize the happy moments (and chicks!) when they come.

Just cellphones, since they (the government) stole the landlines to all remote villages a few years back with the intention of cutting down on costs. There's a public computer just 20km away from our place though, just far enough to make it a strengthening bike ride. :)

Carrots, potatoes, sugar snaps, broccoli, cabbage, salad, corn, dill, parsley and eh... vegetables I'm not sure of the translations for. Thanks; I hope so too! So far it's been groovy (no chicks yet though).

Nice, sadly it's autumn in New Zealand. I can't wait for spring/summer.

Less than 365 days left then!

Hell yeah, summer vacation! Only 2 and a half months to relax

A bit short I know. :/

I just noticed that bunny's going to be like Carrie at the prom.... Chess pieces, huh? Who do you play chess with? That was the rage in the late 90's: classic games online with random humans.

You sure we can't a dispatch from the field, every so often? Hmm, there is your blog site....

Haha, I can see the similarities! :) It's supposed to look like real paint though, for real, it's customary to paint houses red with white frames/borders here in Sweden, especially in suburbs/towns/etc. We have quite a few buildings at our summerplace, sheds and shacks and saunas and stuff, so... there's a lot of painting involved.

I play Chess with anyone who likes to play Chess! In our humble winter abode it's usually an old grumpy next door neighbor, in summer it's friends and family and the occasional strangers at irregular intervals and occasions. Chess is far from my favorite game, but it's the easiest to depict in a picture since the symbols are easy to recognize and relate to, we divulge in plenty of other forms of entertainment too, indoors and outdoors, nothing digital. Rainy days especially. Ah, I played a lot of random-opponent chess at instantchess.com a few years back, it was (probably still is) a fun place. Tried starting my own chess site too (chessence.com), but without the skills to program the game exactly how I wanted that project didn't last very long.

I will dispatch from the patch of grass in occasional dashes from the vastness to where the cash is, for an occasionally blog and login to this mind-boggling creatively hogged inn.

Yupp, my blog is a groovy place. I just realized it doesn't look so well in 1024x786px resolutions, or less, guess I'll fix that when I get back. :/

Btw, do you play?

Hard to believe the anti-spam code got worse... I may have hit submit at midnight, Pico time :\

It's funny how different parts of the world like different color trim on their houses, especially in the US, where many northern European immigrants built their homes over a century ago...

I used to play chess on weekends, at work, in the mall's equipment/personnel room, with a very obese former HS football payer and bar bouncer. He was quite good. I know the rules of play, but none of the strategy involved. My brain's (and eyes are) good at cataloging all possible moves and maybe one or 2 turns down the line, but beyond that, I'm useless.

Oh, you and your prose-speak :) That fellow nietzlawe is really something. Hope he earns a fair dollar in the poetry field. I can certainly see him keeping the upper middle class of beatnik, enthralled with his words.

Indeed.

That it is. We have red mainly because there's a mine in Falu where they dig up a mineral with a red nuance, they started using it for preservational purposes, but with time I suppose it became a tradition. The paint is called Falu Röd (red), though since the original color has plenty of led in it, artifical alternatives are taking over. No idea about the white.

Oh, sounds like you play(ed) waaay more than I do! Have you tried Checkers? Taifho? Chinese Chess? Solitaire? Othello?

I thought I'd write a verseful salute but the words don't compute... indeed.

I guess leaded paint has the tendency to crack and curl up over time. The funny thing is, why tell kids not to eat the paint chips?! What kid or animal in their right mind would eat that, UNLESS some busy-body civil servant, with too much public money, goes on a PR spree :| I think the white in the paint comes from Australian mines... same stuff they use in sunscreen lotion http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titanium_dioxide

Nah, pretty much a loner :( but I've played Othello and (Chinese) Checkers too. Could never figure out Solitaire, even though my cousin/godfather used to play it all the time on the computer I got him.

Have you got box-traps to deal with the inevitable pests coming for your crops? They won't work against the deer, but do fine against rabbits and groundhogs. I know a guy who'll pay 5-10 bucks for a live groundhog. He dumps them into a big plastic barrel, then gets a very long 4"x4" wood post, and .... head shot :| Slightly gamey tasting, but clean tender meat.

They tell kids not to eat paint in the US? Strange place. :P The red paint I speak of doesn't crack up and curl though, it differs from regular paint in that's it partially absorbed by the wood and easy to brush off when you need to add another coat. Also great for old buildings with uneven surfaces that way, a practical link to tradition... I was wondering more about where we Swedes recieved our tradition to paint corners/frames white, if there's any history behind that color... but thanks for the info on the white paint origin of color, good to know! What's the traditional theme where you live, btw? If any?

I was introduced to Othello just a couple of years back, tried to play against my older brother and was suddenly made aware he had been playing that game pretty much all of his growing up. It turned out to be a much more strategical form of entertainment than I thought. The most important piece of strategy: get the corners/prevent opponent from getting corners.

We have most of the crops fenced in against rabbits (no groundhogs in Northern Sweden), and dig down small buckets half-full of water for forest mice and voles (hope that's the right word - Google translate) to run into, it works well when nights are dark but now that the sun is up pretty much all day round it's not so effective. We partially cover the strawberries with nets to scare the birds away too. Tried making a scarecrow once, and placing out plastic snakes, but that didn't work long. The deer haven't been a problem.. yet.

your back!
and just so you know, when i imagine what you look like, i just see doom guy on a laptop drinking coffee, i just wanted to tell you that in the hopes that it would amuse you as much as it did me

Just momentarily dropping by a public computer! Haha, I'm not sure if my level of amusement is on par with yours, or anyone else's who isn't me, but thanks for that mindful image! :) I don't have a laptop btw, Doomguy on a stationary drinking coffee hmmhehe...

lol----\/

lol----^

its gonna be a game to play the game of newgrounds.com

Indeed it is, the game of the century!

How's your crops doing? Despite the wettest June on record since 1860, everything is going suspiciously well in the NE of the US. The deer are only slightly destructive and trampling this year. Can (or are you allowed) to shoot varmints where you are vacationing.... presuming you still are on vacation?

There are no wild deer in Sweden (even though they are allowed to roam freely) so we aren't allowed to shoot them. As for moose, hunting season starts in September. I don't know about bear, or smaller vermin, but rats and mice are always fair game. :P All crops are growing well, though insects are always a bit of a threat. We managed to fence in pretty much everything to keep animals away.

Most berries are ripe now so we've been picking plenty of blueberries and cloudberries. Lingonberries should be ready soon.. strawberries grow by about a liter/day. Yupp, still on 'vacation'.

Oh, you might get a kick out of this guy's 'The Wish Fish Family' series.. could win a free DVD and stuff.

Ah, thanks for the tip. Free stuff is always appreciated..

Miss ya, mate, hope to read and see more from you this September :)

There will be something to hear, at least. See you then! :)

Nietz and I have been hitting it off well, glad to hear everything's going well!
*Bad bugs, bad bugs, wotcha gonna dooo, wotcha gonna dooo when they come for you?* Cops, US TV series... I guess. Try any sprays? Sometimes a rotten egg and garlic spray, used to deter deer, sometimes works to deter bugs too...

:)

Nope, no sprays (incesticides?). We've tried giving them nettle showers, though maybe a bit too late. The potatoe plants seem to be getting mold (blight?) too, but ah well, for the most part it's growing well.

Huh... my cousin found a bag of snuff (powdered tobacco) that we got from a mill, to keep away certain bugs and deer. Been busy with other things, so I'll let you know if it worked as well as it did in the old days.

So next month you'll be back, frying your synapses on electronic communications, games... should really hunt for a GF before coming back, I think. The older you get, the harder it is to get laid :|

Interesting, though that sounds like an expensive repellent? Nettle showers work well at raising the plants immune system, but it's not as effective when they've already been invaded.

Eh yeah, good advice, but alas it is too late! I haveth returned already!
