Sweet! I mean, terrifying. :D I decided to do a search for Doom art today, and it turns out this is actually the only game-related art there is, though there are four pages of paintings tagged the same. I suppose I'll give this one a thorough review.
Compared to the lost souls in the game, this one is fairly different. The only real similarities are the blaze of fire and the menacing appearance. Well, of course the skull-shaped cranium with two horns and irisis that burn with evil intent, but it doesn't look at all as it did in the original games. Nor does it look like it did in the remake (the third one). I can't get the nostalgia out of my head so the originals will always seem better to me, but this is an amazing rendition of an old classic. If they had made the game now, and went with the old hellspawn designs, this is how I hope it would've looked.
The skull isn't just really detailed, with a hue that both flows and darknes, and enforces the threat in the 'face' of the skull, but it also embodies the notion of evil. If evil could have a face, this is it. It's not just the jagged teeth or the horns or the darkness in the eyes, but the very features that define the face. Background seems a bit rushed compared to the lost soul itself, and the bottom left feels too... blank, but it's certainly burning. If you ever feel like having fun with the cyberdemon concept, that would be truly awesome. ;) Thanks for a great piece of art!
