CONGRATULATIONS, YOU'RE AWESOME.

THANKS, YOU TOO!

Ha, nah, I don't have any bongos, or played them often enough to get a technique... kinda bad for the joints in your fingers. So how's things at home, since you got back from vacation?

BTW, is Saab back in business? They had the wackiest TV commercials back in the day (80's)... long and expensive ones too. They should've used tanks to sell their cars, not fighter jets :|

Ah, didn't know there were side-effects. It should strengthen the muscles though! We had all our windows changed in the house last week, but apart from that it's all back to routine. So... pretty good!

Yeah, they're back, but they're Chinese now. Since the brand was first sold to General Motors, they're missing plenty of patents, and they're not allowed to use the brand name on regular cars (there are still trucks/planes with the old SAAB brand). The new brand name for the automobile part of the company is NEVS - National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB, the mascot will remain though! Looks like old SAAB models might start becoming collectibles. :) It's a bit of a shame both big Swedish car brands turned Chinese (Volvo too), but at least production's still local...

Never actually watched a SAAB commercial though, need to look up a few!

bongos can be uncomfortable to play, as the proper way to play them is to hold the bongos between your legs. generally harder to learn, as the instrument is more finger oriented. if youre looking for a similar latin percussion instrument to play, I recommend conga(s). they have a broader sound, it's more comfortable, and are more slap-based and easier IMO. your hands may get sore when learning first but if you use proper technique it shouldn't cause any persistent pain or long term damage!

I'd prefer Bongo's to a regular regular drum set though, it seems they require completely different technique... and some real multitasking talent. After countless hours of practicing on varied surfaces around and outside houses it's just a whole lot of fun with bongos, boxes, stuff like that. :) My set of rhythms is probably a bit limited though... ah, Congos, I've tried those too! Good fun, though the surfaces were a bit small. Sounds like you've had some official schooling?

Welcome back and big thanks for welcoming me friend :)

Thank you for the follow! :)

Yes I actually have. I've played a lot of it without cheats but some of it's impossible to not have cheats. Terry himself said this wad was made to use "sv_infiniteammo 1".

I recall at least one video claiming to play through the entire thing without cheats, though I don't think I watched through the whole thing. Personally it seemed impossible, but considering some fans have gone to such lengths as to even defeat the Cyberdemon with fists only (and no cheats)... it's probably possible. :)

you might have played the smaller congas, the standard sizes are large enough to easily fit both of your hands.

minimal formal training, not nearly as much with guitar and piano- tho I'm better at drums than piano. i have had both african and latin percussion lessons over the years, just introductory stuff though.

beating a cyberdemon with just punches doesn't seem TOO difficult. I know I've done it with a chainsaw. I mean they're pretty slow so you can just run in circles around them, and time your attacks right. now, try killing a cyberdemon in an open area, where chaingunners are shooting at you from a distance, with archvilles behind them (which makes them pretty much immortal). There was another wad I played where you where stripped of all your weapons except a chainsaw and had to kill an archville, with minimal hiding area.

Aha, must've been the small ones. I've also played around a bit with a Timpani and a few marching drums, though I don't have any of these items at home. Any other instruments you know how to play that I don't know you know?

Huh, but you have get close to punch them, and at close range a single rocket will kill you instantly so... well maybe I just don't have the patience to wait out the right moments to attack...

That does sound like a much harder scenario! There's this one megawad I played through where you face hordes of the same enemy in each level. The weapons/ammo never run out, so the first ten or twenty levels were a piece of cake, even with plenty of cyberdemons and masterminds... but when the archivevile horde appears... oh man, hiding from a few just put you in front of all the others, no safe hiding spaces in an arena-type level, and when you're shot into the air once there's nothing to hide at all behind so it's an instant kill. That was pretty tough but finally... I gave up. :/

nope, that's all of them. but as with most walks of life, "you learn one instrument and you know them all". although I can't play any blown or bowed instruments for the life of me.

yes, but the cyberdemon fires rockets in pairs of threes, with a gap between. you'd move at him in an elliptical motion. or if you get him behind a wall or an object some how to partially shield yourself. I remember there was a level in a mod where a cyberdevil was at lower platform and you could attack him over the wall, the rocket blast wasn't powerful enough to reach you.

ahh I've played those type of WADS. the game lags so crazily when they're saturated with that much enemies though. Chaingunners are probably the worst in large numbers. atleast when you have two different types of enemies, they'll start attacking each other if their attacks hits another enemy.

Indeed. Have you ever played a piano with two sets of keys btw? Or a guitar with two sets of strings?

I'm getting tempted to try it again... the few attempts thus far didn't go to well, even the E2M8 isn't as open as I'd like, it's easy to get to close to a wall or strafe into a pillar.

There were a few chaingunner hordes in this WAD too, but as long as you can attack from a long distance they're not that much of a threat, they catch up slowly and they die quickly. In open areas I admit they're a real pain though...

the Archville mazes are my favorite!

In Doom 2? As for me I prefer carnage in large numbers; open areas full of foes whose projectiles you can zigzac between. :)

no to the double keyboard and guitar. i have played a 12 string guitar, which is basically just a normal guitar with doubled strings (you can't play a single string at once). but by sets you're probably thinking of the double neck guitars that Jimmy Page played.

someone needs to modify the code that allows for sniper rifles (both the player and the enemies) in that game! I'd imagine it would be hard if not impossible to make code to allow the camera to zoom in though.

Yeah, double necked guitars are what I was referring to, never heard of a 12 string before! Need to look at up, interesting things...

That would be cool. Playing the original game with a sniper feature especially... through the ports they've already added plenty of new features like the ability to jump, look around with mouse, added support for levels with ladders, slopes, underwater areas.. maybe it's already been done! Time to research a bit...

Terry himself has a few videos beating the wad using only sv_infiniteammo 1. Of course, since it's his own wad he knows how to do this. And I'd love to play online with you as well.

He should be the expert! Yeah, that'd be fun, I'll have to take a rain check now though!

what program(s) do you use to play online? zdoom and skulltag?

Skulltag is what I used to use, haven't been playing online in a while! You?

Aw man, I miss these old Newgrounds icons.

Same here! If you miss them enough there's a userscript to swap them out though. :)

well...congrats

well..thanks! :)

Hmm...what old set?

Hmm... the level icons used before the redesign?

I've been making Terry wads as well, it's pretty great to see peoples' reaction to it on idgames. Btw, I'm pretty sure I don't have my programs set up to play online. You know how to?

That'd be interesting to try! Links? I don't know if there are still people playing through the original games, but zdaemon.org looks promising, just download/install/search for servers/play. I haven't tried it myself though, yet, was looking around for an alternative since Skulltag seems to have been discontinued.

Doing Halloween this year? I know you're kinda old for that sort of thing, but what about going out to a party or event?

A buddy usually hosts the Halloween party I go to, but he just moved to his own place and is busy with life so it seems that tradition might die down... this year at least. I haven't gotten around to buying an authentic pirate sword yet though so I can wait. :D You never get too old for Halloween! I'd trick or treat if we did that sort of thing here.

My sister's birthday's the same day btw, so we've always celebrated that more than the global occasion. Plus, Halloween's not a big thing here in Sweden, and people keep confusing it with All Hallows Eve, so we get the occasional rare trick or treater on the wrong day.

How about you? I think I read somewhere you were going as a pirate?

Pirate? Me? Me pirate? I haven't dressed up for Halloween, since the 20th century!
I'm a very unsuccessful poon pirate :) I just like watching ladies in cosplay is all.

But, I can say, "never say never", because I'd like to dress up and find a party... but it seems unlikely.
It would have to be on a Thursday :p Maybe something will happen on the weekend afterwards....

Haha, better luck as a real pirate maybe! Have you ever been to Comic Con btw? Wegra posted some pretty nice pics from the recent event, plenty of ladies in cosplay.

D'you have a costume prepared?

Doom Tetris: http://klikscene.com/flash/idttrs.html

Woah, nice! And it's made by Radix too! Wonder why it's not on NG yet... sending him a PM..

Btw, when I say nice I mean the fact that there is a game like this, the objects are a bit hard to puzzle together, but that's a minor facet...

yeah i know, the game's really hard. i've only managed to clear two lines.

So far I haven't managed a single line, just given the game a quick try when you posted the link. Time for a serious attempt...

OK, serious attempt attempted, still no lines!! The renevants don't seem to fit anywhere, except maybe together with a meat slab.... maybe with continual play it'd be possible... to advance a level. :P Reply to PM btw: Doomtris/iddtrs was just a gag game made in a couple hours for a photoshop thread on a comedy forum. It's barely playable due to bugs and the silly monster pose graphics which make the shape of some blocks pretty difficult to make out. It'd need a bunch of work to make it worthwhile distributing, I'm glad it got some blog exposure etc but I don't really have time to do anything else with it and it's pretty bad in its current form.

So that's it then. :/

Nope, just the same costume I wear regularly: T-shirt and jeans
I'm over 40 and a bachelor with no kids, ya know....

You don't need much to dress up though. An eye-patch, bandana with skull decor, clothes that suit the era, some fake scars, a real knife...
